First I would like to thank TRENDnet  for sponsoring this managed 10GbE switch for the NAS CAD Review. Getting in touch with their support division was an easy task with a rapid response time. Through all my questions and inquiries the support team was eager to help and went out of their way to ensure their customer’s satisfaction and replied within a short time (normally within 24h).

The TEG-7080ES is a 10Gb 8-port managed (or smart) network switch  with many features including:

    • 8x 10GBASE-T ports
    • Supports 2.5G/5G NBASE-T connection speeds
    • Easy-to-use web-based management interface
    • Supports LACP, VLAN, QoS, and IGMP Snooping
    • Bandwidth control per port
    • 160Gbps switching capacity
    • IEEE 802.1p QoS with queue scheduling support
    • 1U rack mountable

The switch comes packaged in a fairly eco-friendly box with minimal plastic waste; however, it is still well padded as to avoid any damage to the switch during transport. With a unit sized at 330 x 230 x 44mm (13 x 9 x 1.73 in.)  and the included rack brackets and screws, the switch can be mounted in a standard server rack in a 1U height slot. The power supply is included as an internal power supply and delivers 30W at 100-240V AC 50/60Hz. Due to this and the support of many IEEE Standards, the switch can be used globally without modification. All that is needed is an IEC 60320 C13 appliance connector to the corresponding country wall plug.

A web-based GUI for configuring the Switch sample picture.

Right out of the Box the TEG-7080ES works like a charm. Simply ‘plug and play’. To make things easier, TRENDnet programed an intuitive web-based GUI (Graphis User Interface) for managing the network configurations. This GUI has a very neat and responsive design which delivers a good overview of the switch’s capabilities. Each setting is easy to find, with my only complaint being the lack of a short description of what each settings does. This is only relevant for users with little networking experience. Descriptions of each setting can be found here.

The switch works well without any noticeable break in the network bandwidth. On occasion, the fans spin up in order to cool the internal components. This can be reduced by avoiding warm surroundings such as direct sunlight. While cooling, the fan emits a low hum which is barely audible (a maximum of 39.5 dBA according to TRENDnet).

To indicate the status of each network port, the switch includes two LEDs per port as well as a power indicator (LED) and system LED. The switch includes one button on the front side to switch between all the LEDs being ‘on’ and ‘off’ (short press of the button) with the exception of the power LED . A long press (3 seconds) performs an automatic cable diagnostics test to check the integrity of each port network connection. With the LEDs in their ‘on’ state, the two LEDs next to each port (left and right) indicate the network state / configuration speed of 100/1000Mbps, 5Gbps, or 10Gbps.

Overall the TRENDnet managed 10GbE switch is a cost-effective solution for 10 Gigabit networking in your home or work environment. It is reliable and very easy to configure for your specific desired functionality. I am very happy with this switch and can advise other home users or small businesses to purchase this 10Gb network switch.
